STARKLANDS VISION

Toronto’s newest transit accessible mixed-use community located at Union Street and Turnberry Avenue. The Starklands will revitalize underutilized industrial land around the future St. Clair Smart Track Station offering a mix of housing options, attractive jobs, new park space, new retail services, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

The Starklands community design is based on the following principles:

  1. Maximize opportunities offered by the future St. Clair SmartTrack station and support its success.
  2. Improve the safety and connectivity of the road network for all road users.
  3. Build a new vibrant residential community that reinforces the existing adjacent neighbourhoods.
  4. Develop a comprehensive pedestrian and bicycle network.
  5. Create and connect new parks and public spaces.

Context

Toronto Stockyards District

The surrounding area is evolving from an older, more traditional industrial area surrounded by low-rise neighbourhoods to a vibrant mixed-use community. The current industrial landscape was spawned by access to the railway. It was the intersection of two rail lines that provided access to goods movement which created the industrial area. Now access to the railway for people movement will spur the rejuvenation of the industrial area into a modern mixed-use community.

The Site Today

The site is currently used for the recovery, recycling, restoring and storage of automobiles and supporting industrial offices. As a result of the City’s proposed transportation infrastructure improvements, including the new road extensions that need to be accommodated, the remaining Starklands will no longer be viable for that purpose. The strategic location of the remaining lands however, make it a logical conversion to a broader mix of more compatible uses in keeping with the emerging Stockyards District and SmartTrack transportation hub.
